As preparation for the redevelopment of Spanish Town Hospital in St. Catherine gets underway, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says stakeholders are close to breaking ground.

Speaking with reporters following a tour of the plant on Wednesday, Dr. Tufton said the ministry has received all the approvals from its multi-lateral partners.

But he said there are several implications regarding some of the services at the more than 70-year-old facility which have to be relocated ahead of the largest infrastructure development investment in public health in the nation's history.

Stressing that majority of the work being carried out to date is to ensure staff and patients are comfortable during the construction of the six-storey building, Dr. Tufton said the government has learnt from the handling of the Cornwall Regional Hospital rehabilitation.

"You're going to have an active construction site where you have potential for a noise pollution, air pollution and men moving around working, patients requiring services, staff that may be inconvenienced and at the same time, you know, the building out which will be good over time. But in the meantime, we have to make sure that we put in place the conditions for work. So what we're doing here is setting the environment for the construction and setting it in a way where patients can feel even better than they did before," said the Health Minister.

Dr. Tufton said while services at Spanish Town Hospital are being relocated, modern equipment have been installed, including a brand new lab testing machine that will offer testing services well beyond what was previously available.

"The building comes with all the services of waiting areas, staff rooms for lunch, for meetings, a more airy environment with windows, air conditioning, so it is a lot more pleasant to work in - all of which is intended to create a much better facility for the people while we transition to the main building," he added.

The minister said groundbreaking for the main building could take place "within the next two months or so".
