Guyana awaits election results as vote count continues

Guyana's President Dr. Irfaan Ali says he expects that the outcome of Monday's general and regional elections will be clear on Tuesday as the counting of ballots continue.

An estimated 757,690 people were listed as being eligible to vote in the election held on a public holiday.

Dr. Ali, who is heading the incumbent People's Progressive Party Civic as its presidential candidate, said he also wanted to congratulate voters on the peaceful electoral process.

The two major parties, the PPPC and the Coalition of Partnership for National Unity, said they believe that the voter turnout was low but remained confident of victory.
