Haiti gang leader threatens to kill kidnapped missionaries

The leader of the Haitian gang that kidnapped seventeen American and Canadian missionaries last Saturday is threatening to execute them if the ransom is not paid.

The leader, Wilson Joseph, made the threat in a video message being circulated.

Earlier this week, Justice and Interior Minister Liszt Quitel said the kidnappers want US$1 million per person released.

Media reports say the gang "400 Mawozo" carried out the kidnapping of the foreigners, including four children, aged eight months to 15 years old, as they travelled by bus.

Mr. Quitel said the FBI and the Haitian National Police were negotiating with the kidnappers and trying to obtain the release of the 16 American and one Canadian hostages.
