Lisa Hanna
The Member of Parliament for St. Ann South East, Lisa Hanna, has tabled a motion calling for Parliament to revive discussions on laws which make abortion illegal.
She notes that pregnant women who terminate their pregnancies or seek to procure an abortion can be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The MP further pointed out that in 1975 the then minister of health tabled a Ministry Paper outlining scenarios in which abortions could be allowed but the law was never amended.
Miss Hanna also noted that no progress has been made on the report of an advisory group, which had recommended repealing sections of the Offences Against the Person Act nor on the report from the parliamentary committee which also looked into the matter.
As such, she called for the House to debate the report of the Human Resource and Social Development Committee, which she said had been tabled in Parliament by Ronald Thwaites in March 2020.
