Health Minister vows to increase legislation for funeral homes and morgues

Dr. Christopher Tufton, Minister of Health, has promised to lead the charge in securing increased regulation for funeral establishments and mortuaries in Jamaica.

Dr. Tufton said Cabinet will be reviewing the Public Health Funeral Establishment and Mortuary Operations Regulations.

The Ministry of Health also created guidelines for the operation of Funeral Establishments and Mortuaries in August 2014.

Dr. Tufton said the industry is currently self-regulated which can lead to several issues.

The Health Minister believes key changes are needed and said the Ministry would be moving toward the "development of legislation for the industry and the critical areas of focus" which are "related to critical accountability (as well as) complying to international best practices as it relates to the preservation of public health."
