The Ministry of Health and Wellness is warning that it is seeing a spike in the transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus or COVID-19 among the population.

Jamaicans are being urged to remain vigilant.

The Health Ministry says the country recorded 176 COVID-19 cases last month, a 16 per cent increase from the 152 recorded in June.

It says Kingston and St. Andrew recorded the highest number of cases with 25 per cent, followed by St. Catherine and St. James which both had 18 per cent.

The Ministry is recommending that members of the public get vaccinated as the best defence against severe illness and death associated with COVID-19.

At present, doses of the Pfizer vaccine are available to the population.

The Health and Wellness Ministry is urging members of the public to take the necessary precaution to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Persons are being told to remain at home if feeling ill, wear a mask to prevent spread of respiratory droplets, practice proper sneezing and coughing etiquette especially when in public spaces, and wash hands or use hand sanitizers.

Jamaicans travelling abroad are especially urged to be diligent in practicing these infection prevention protocols.

The Ministry is also urging immuno-compromised persons and those with chronic conditions to pay particular attention to their care management.

Thirteen COVID-19 deaths have been reported in Jamaica since the start of the year.
