Prime Minister Andrew Holness
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader and Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness, says the government does not need an opposition to hold it accountable.
Dr. Holness says JLP supporters are the government's most constructive critics, unlike some followers of the opposition People's National Party (PNP), whom he suggested are uninformed.
"The Jamaica Labour Party workers are not fanatics. They don't believe in following blindly. The Jamaica Labour Party workers, they are very direct, they will tell you how it is. But that is the nature of the Jamaica Labour Party supporter. We don't really need an opposition because our supporters hold us to account."
The jab followed the PNP's anti-corruption protest at Heroes Circle in Kingston on June 2, where some of its supporters were unclear on the main reason for the demonstration, which was against the appointment of Dennis Chung to lead the Financial Investigations Division (FID).
Speaking at a workers meeting and appreciation ceremony in Hanover Eastern on Sunday, Dr. Holness said he has grown to respect the JLP workers who are not "blind followers" of the party.
"That is not this party. We come here to enlighten, we come here to educate, we come here to give you knowledge," he declared.
