Hurricane Ida which is now west of Cuba is forecast to hammer the northern US Gulf Coast as a major hurricane this weekend with life-threatening storm surge, dangerous rainfall flooding, potentially catastrophic winds and tornadoes.
New hurricane and storm surge warnings have been issued.
A hurricane warning is in effect for sections of Louisiana.
The National Hurricane Center says Ida is likely to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane by Sunday.
It has already brought heavy rain and high winds to western Cuba.
