Ill health has forced the Governor General, His
Excellency Professor Sir Kenneth Hall to resign just before his third
anniversary in the post.
Sir Kenneth will officially step down on February 26.
A sombre-looking Prime Minister Golding told the House of Representatives that Sir Kenneth will be leaving King's House in six weeks.
Mr. Golding announced the imminent departure of the Queen's representatives after news swirled on Tuesday that he would step down.
The Prime Minister cited health reasons for the resignation.
"Sir Kennth had advised me in July of last year of his desire for health reasons to demit office in October.
He subsequently agreed to stay until February 2009. His request to proceed on retirement was conveyed to and has been approved by Her Majesty, the Queen," said Mr. Golding.
Sir Kenneth will be replaced by Dr. Patrick Allen, the President of the West Indies Union of Seventh Day Adventists he is to be sworn into office the same day that Sir Kenneth is to retire.
In the meantime, while there has been no official confirmation of the nature of his illness, RJR News sources said Sir Kenneth has complications related to diabetes which have reportedly affected his vision.
Professor Kenneth Octavius Hall left academia and was installed as Jamaica's Governor General in February 2006 to succeed the retiring Sir Howard Cooke.
He was Principal of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, when he was called by the then P.J. Patterson-led PNP Administration to serve in the highest office of the land.
He became Jamaica's fifth Governor General, following in the steps of predecessors Sir Kenneth Blackburn; Sir Clifford Campbell, Sir Florizel Glasspole and Sir Howard Cooke.
