The improper disposal of commercial waste continues to be a major headache for The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) despite calls for business operators to make arrangements with the entity for garbage collection.
With the festive season drawing closer, Audley Gordon, Executive Director of the NSWMA, fears that the problem will only get worse.
“It is all over Jamaica; wherever you go you will see a number of arrangements informally made with sometimes even men of unsound mind to remove the garbage from business places, and when that happens they throw it anywhere,” he told RJR News.
The NSWMA then has to follow-up and retrieve the garbage from where it has been improperly disposed, he said.
This, he said, was “garbage from profit,” which the businesses should be paying to have properly disposed of.
He’s therefore appealing to those business operators to make proper arrangements to have the garbage moved to a proper disposal site.
He said the issue is more widespread in Santa Cruz, Port Antonio, and Papine.
