Improvements expected in fuel delivery to western parishes

Works Minister Robert Morgan

Works Minister Robert Morgan says efforts are to be ramped up to get fuel to western parishes.

The passage of Hurricane Melissa has resulted in a shortage of the commodity across the parishes hardest hit by the hurricane.

Gas stations fortunate enough to have fuel have seen long lines of vehicles and thick crowds with several bottles in hand, hoping for even a drop of the commodity.

Minister Morgan says it was only over the last few days that tanker drivers were able to receive the all-clear to make deliveries  after blocked roads were made passable for heavy equipment.

But he noted that, with the destruction of some gas stations in western parishes, the issue is not just about delivering gas into the community but where to safely store the fuel.

"What I can confidently say now is that for the gas stations that are able to take fuel, the retailers, the haulage contractors are now able to traverse that area," he said at Monday's press conference.
