Increase in reports of breaches of the labour laws

Data from the Ministry of  Labour have revealed an increase in complaints from workers of employers breaching Jamaica's labour laws. The information is contained in the Ministry's just released annual report for 2016/2017.
 
The report shows that 4,038 complaints were received during the 2016/17 financial year, an increase of 166 or 4.3% when compared to 2015/16. 
 
Among these complaints, 1,741, or  43%, related to the Employment Termination and Redundancy Payments Act while there were 1,551 cases regarding breaches of the Holiday with Pay Pay Act.
 
The Ministry also received 292 complaints of  breaches of the National Minimum Wage Order while 244 cases concerned employers who did not abide by the Minimum Wage Act.
 
According to the report, the majority of  the complaints were received from females.
 
The Labour Ministry conducted 1,202 investigations, representing a 53% increase over 2015/16. The majority was undertaken in relation to the Minimum Wage Act.
