The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the fatal shooting of a man believed to be Alex Smith, also known as 'AJ', during a police operation in Cockburn Pen, Kingston 11, on Wednesday afternoon.
Police say members of the St. Andrew South Proactive Investigation Unit were conducting crime prevention and investigative enquiries following a recent murder in the Guava Road area when they received information about armed men at the intersection of Guava Road and Woodpecker Avenue.
The officers went to premises on Woodpecker Avenue, where two constables reportedly encountered a shirtless man inside a board structure.
Police say the man pointed a firearm at them, prompting the officers to fire.
The wounded man was taken to Kingston Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 4 p.m.
Police say a 9-millimetre pistol, loaded with two rounds, was recovered at the scene.
Two police constables reported firing a total of six rounds from their service pistols during the incident.
