INDECOM's probe of police killing of Jamar Farquharson in "early stage"

Hamish Campbell, Assistant Commissioner of INDECOM

Assistant Commissioner of INDECOM, Hamish Campbell, says the commission's investigation of the alleged extrajudicial killing of Jamar Farquharson by police officers is still in the early stage.

Farquharson, 22, was reportedly fatally shot last Monday, after members of the Jamaica Constabulary force entered his home in Cherry Tree Lane, Clarendon.

The police claim they shot him after he pulled a firearm on them.

Mr. Campbell says INDECOM is still awaiting the postmortem report.

As public pressure continues to mount on the police high command to implement the mandatory use of body-worn cameras by officers on planned operations, Mr. Campbell is stressing that the use of such devices greatly enhances transparency in investigations.

Since the start of the year, 226 people have been fatally shot by members of the security forces; a significant increase compared to 189 fatalities recorded in 2024.
