The Ministry of Industry, Investment & Commerce is seeking clarification from the Scrap Metal Federation of Jamaica, about the contents of a newspaper advertisement placed on Friday.
This follows a shutdown of the industry by the Government earlier this week. In the advertisement titled, Why Kill It If You Can Cure It, the federation questioned if there was a hidden agenda in the shutting down of the industry.
It condemned the criminal activity in the sector, but added that justice is not served when the innocent are punished along with the guilty.
However the Industry Ministry sees the advertisements as loaded with innuendos, and asked for clarification of the contents.
The Ministry highlighted what it interpreted was a suggestion that there were corrupt public officials involved in the trade, and it urged the Federation to provide any such information to the police.
It asserted that the Ministry has no hidden agenda concerning the scrap metal trade as implied by the Federation. With regard to the good suffering for the bad due to the closure of the trade, it noted that the Government took the decision because it couldn't allow one industry to exist at the expense of others.
