Jackson objects to "greenish" colour of new JCF motorcycles

Fitz Jackson

Fitz Jackson, Opposition Spokesman on National Security, is continuing his objection to the colour of the new motorcycles purchased for the police force despite public backlash.

On Monday, Mr. Jackson described the motorcycles as green and said the choice of colour was a flagrant attempt to politicise the operations of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) as green is the colour used by the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

However, it has since been pointed out that the vehicles are in fact a shade of yellow, which is typically used to ensure high visibility.

While Mr. Jackson admits he has not seen the motorcycles in person, he maintains that, based on photographs, the colour is ambiguous because it appears "yellowish" as well as "greenish".

"People react to what appear to them; that's what the technical definition of the colour is. Some of us don't even know the proper name of some colour but we describe it as how it appear to us, and so people will respond that way," Mr. Jackson asserted, noting that, given the political culture in Jamaica, any possibility of misunderstanding and ambiguity should be avoided.

He also argued that the colour chosen is not the only one which can ensure high visibility.

He said he has communicated the Opposition's disapproval to Dr. Horace Chang, Minister of National Security, and emphasised to him that the motorcycles could transmit the appearance of a police service being complicit with partisan politics.
