Jamaica, Bahamas pushing back against US travel advisories

The tourist boards of Jamaica and The Bahamas are insisting that the two countries are still safe for tourists after the United States issued recent travel warnings about the nations.

The US embassy in Jamaica has issued a Level 3 travel advisory for tourists to "reconsider travel," which is just one level short of the most severe warning to Americans advising against travel altogether.

The U.S. embassy in the Bahamas also released a security warning and travel advisory that that multi-island state is unsafe for tourists following 18 murders — "primarily" motivated by gang violence — in January alone.

But the governments of both nations have encouraged tourists to continue booking travel.

The Jamaica Tourist Board says the crime rate involving visitors "remains extremely low at 0.01 per cent.

The Tourist Board noted that there are distinctly defined areas within Jamaica that the advisory cites as having high risk for crime.

The Bahamian tourism authorities also say the warnings and advisories do not reflect general safety in the country.
