Discussions have started between the Cuban and Jamaican governments on the anti-viral drug Interferon Alpha 2B.

Interferon Alpha 2B, developed in Cuba, is among 30 drugs being used in the fight against the COVID-19 virus in other jurisdictions.

Following the suggestion from the Leader of the Opposition last week for the government to consider accessing the drug, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton said teams in Jamaica will conduct enquiries regarding the effectiveness of the drug.

However, Cuban ambassador to Jamaica, Ines Fors Fernandez, said the process to introduce the drug in Jamaica will take time because of possible guidelines and procedures that may need to be followed as it relates to acquiring new drugs.

She was speaking Monday on TVJ's Smile Jamaica programme.

Dr. Jose Armando Arronte, National Coordinator with the Cuban Medical Brigade, explained that Interferon Alpha 2B is not a cure for COVID-19 but helps to stop the virus from multiplying, which allows the patient to get better faster.

In addition, he said frontline health workers may use it to prevent contracting the coronavirus.
