Jamaica Customs Agency issues warning following incident at NMIA

The Jamaica Customs Agency has issued a warning that persons will be prosecuted for assaulting customs personnel conducting official duties, this follows a recent incident at the Norman Manley International Airport.

A statement from the agency says a customs officer was assaulted by two women after the assessment of  customs duty.

The assessment was calculated after one of  the women exceeded her US$500   duty-free allowance.

Both women were charged with obstructing a customs officer, disorderly behaviour and using indecent language.

They appeared before the St. Andrew Parish Court where they pleaded guilty and were each fined $110,000  .
Jamaica Customs Agency says if  there is disagreement regarding an assessment of  Customs duty or charges a request can be made for a re-assessment by a supervisor.

If  the individual is still dissatisfied with the re-assessment the next option is the Appeals Process through the agency's Valuation and Verification Unit.
