Jamaica on track to remove British monarch as head of state by 2025 - Terrelonge

By Halshane Burke

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Alando Terrelonge says Jamaica is on track to remove the British monarch as head of state by next year.

Speaking in an interview with the UK based newspaper, The Independent, Mr. Terrelonge said it is hoped that by 2025 the government will have completed the reforms and removed the British monarch as the head of our democracy.

Mr. Terelonge is reported as stating that the move will mean Jamaica will become "truly liberated" while honouring its African ancestors who were trafficked, brutalised and enslaved by Britain.

A 14-member Constitutional Reform Committee was established to set out the necessary steps for the country to become a republic, including the form the head of state would take.
