A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Jamaica as the Area of Low Pressure over the west-central Caribbean Sea continues to become better organized, and has the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone this morning.
This means that tropical storm conditions pose a possible threat to Jamaica within 36 hours.
At 5:00 a.m., Potential Tropical Cyclone Number 18 was about 260 miles south of Kingston or 293 miles southeast of Negril Point, Jamaica
The Disturbance is expected to turn to the northwest today and continue for the next few days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hour with higher gusts.
On the forecast track, the centre of the system is expected to be near Jamaica by late this evening, and near or over the Cayman Islands Tomorrow and Wednesday.
It is expected to produce heavy rainfall and strong, gusty winds, primarily over eastern and southern parishes today and tomorrow.
Landslides should also be anticipated in vulnerable sections of the island.
Over the marine areas, the forecast is for widespread showers and thunderstorms, which may be heavy at times, with strong gusty winds up to tropical storm force to affect all marine zones today, especially inshore and offshore the south coast.
All small craft operators, including fishers from the cays and banks, should by now be in port and are urged to complete their necessary safety precautions.
Manager of the Weather Services Branch at the Met Office, Rohan Brown says, with the level of rainfall expected, in association with the weather system, parts of the island could experience further land slippages.
