Jamaica is to receive more than J$3 billion in grant funds and budget support from the European Union (EU). An agreement is to be signed Tuesday for Jamaica to receive grants totalling J$2.6 billion. The money will provide improved maternal and paediatric health care in public health institutions island-wide.
It has also been announced that Jamaica will receive J$951 million in budget support to mitigate the effects of natural disasters.
A statement from the Delegation of the European Union on Monday said the health sector grant will assist the Government of Jamaica's efforts to meet UN Millennium Development Goals, reduce child mortality and improve maternal health.
The money will also go to train doctors and nurses, create six units for critically ill new-borns at four referral regional hospitals as well as the Victoria Jubilee Hospital and the Bustamante Hospital for Children.
