Jamaica to receive millions of pounds for Gustav recovery

Jamaica is to receive 3.9 million pounds or JA$450 million from the European Commission to help with the post-Tropical Storm Gustav recovery effort.

The money is expected to be released shortly.

$217 million or 1.9 million pounds will go towards infrastructure repairs.

Another $230 million or 2 million pounds is to be allocated to projects designed to alleviate the suffering caused by the storm.

The first sum is being allocated through the EC's budget support programme with the aim of reducing poverty and minimising the risks to the country's economic reform process.

The Financing Agreement for the release of the funds was signed between the European Union and the Government last month.

Head of the European Commission delegation to Jamaica, Ambassador Marco Alemanni has described the release of the funds as timely given that the 2009 Hurricane Season has begun.
