Jamaican-born soldier to be sentenced next month after murder conviction in New Jersey

A Jamaican born soldier in the US Army and his co-accused are to be sentenced on August 4 for the killing of an army corporal in New Jersey, three years ago.

A jury last week found Jamaal Mellish, a Fort Drum soldier, and Hannan Aiken, guilty on 11 counts related to the death of 20 year-old Hayden Harris.

The counts include murder, kidnapping, carjacking, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Mellish was 23 years old at the time he committed the crime, while Aiken was 16.

Corporal Harris was found dead in December 2020 in a wooded area in the Byram Township of New Jersey.

Prosecutors said it all started with a vehicle swap which Corporal Harris wanted to undo, resulting in his kidnapping and killing.

The New Jersey Herald reported that cell phone data used in the trial put Mellish and Aiken on the road where Harris was found following a late-night drive from near Fort Drum.

Evidence also included photos of Corporal Harris and guns that were deleted from Mellish's phone the day after Harris's killing.
