Jamaican man charged for shoplifting in Barbados remanded

CARICOM residents have been urged to make the necessary applications when they decide to stay in a regional country.

Barbados Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes made that appeal after it was found that 31-year-old Jamaican citizen Mario Johnson, who admitted to a shoplifting charge, did not have a work permit or any document pending approval.

Mr Johnson had informed the police that he was employed by a construction firm in Barbados and a work permit application had been made.

The court heard that he arrived in Barbados on March 7, 2021.

After initially entering a not guilty plea, Mr Johnson subsequently admitted to stealing several items from Massy Stores on April 27.

He is to return to court today for sentencing.
