Jamaican man sentenced to more than eight years in US prison

A Jamaican man, who United States authorities say intended to distribute controlled substances that were shipped from California to Ohio through a global logistics company, has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison.

O'Shane Smith, 35, was also residing illegally in the US and was ordered deported after completing his sentence.

Smith pleaded guilty to drug conspiracies, possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, and illegal re-entry following deportation.

According to court records, on January 20, 2023, federal investigators intercepted a suspicious package that was mailed from a United Parcel Service store in Inglewood, California.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and found 5,323 grams or 11 pounds of methamphetamine packed inside the parcel.

Agents proceeded to conduct a controlled delivery to the listed address in Cleveland, Ohio where a person, identified as Smith, arrived, retrieved the UPS parcel and departed in a vehicle.

After a brief chase, Smith was apprehended. He reportedly admitted to being offered a thousand dollars to retrieve and deliver the UPS parcel with the drugs to a man.

Smith also reportedly admitted to illegally entering the US from Mexico near San Diego, California, in 2022.

He had previously been removed from the United States for illegal reentry in March 2021.
