A 14-year-old Dunoon Technical High Student was among nine people killed in a motor vehicle crash in South Florida in the United States, on Monday night.

He has been identified as Michael Hall Jr., the son of a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Most of the victims are believed to be children.

A report from NBC 6 in South Florida said the crash took place in Palm Beach County.

"A Ford Explorer was going westbound when it lost control, drove off the road, slammed into a guardrail and then flipped over, landed in a canal. Four people died at the scene. Six others were taken to the hospital, but only one of them survived," the report said.

Radio Jamaica News spoke with Commanding Officer for the Kingston Eastern Police Tommy-Lee Chambers, who said District Constable Michael Hall, who is assigned to the division, has been left devastated by the loss of his son and other members of his family.

"He is very devastated and heartbroken and also blames himself for the death of his son. The incident has left the Kingston Eastern family and community in shock and grief. Our area chaplain, police, family and friends are in dialogue with him and we will provide all the support that is needed at this time. I ask everyone to remember him in their prayers," said Superintendent Chambers.

The family had been on vacation in Florida.
