An overwhelming majority of Jamaicans are firmly against their Government accepting partial funding of the construction of a new oprison by the United Kingdom.
The majority view in a recently commissioned RJR News/Don Anderson Poll is that the proposal should be rejected.
British Prime Minister James Cameron made the recommendation late last year while on a visit to Jamaica.
The prison, towards which the British Government would contribute 25 million pounds, would also house Jamaican convicts in UK prisons who agree to finish serving their sentences in Jamaica.
While it has been established that Jamaica desperately needs new prisons, those surveyed were against the idea.
Pollster Don Anderson said that the survey was conducted among more than 1,000 persons islandwide.
"Seventy seven percent of the persons disagreed with the notion that it should be accepted, only 21 percent felt this was something the government should accept," Anderson said.
