Jamaica/U.S.A to hold talks on natural gas for electricity production

Paulwell, speaking on Beyond the Headlines on Thursday
There is a major development on the horizon that could bring tremendous benefits to fulfilling Jamaica's energy needs.

Jamaica is exploring partnerships with the Government of the United States for natural gas to be used in the production of  electricity. It will involve high level talks next month with US Vice President Joe Biden.
Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell made the disclosure on Thursday, while speaking on RJR's Beyond the Headlines.

He said this latest consideration had a lot to do "with what has happened with the explosion of natural gas in the US marketplace," but was careful to stress that this was not intended to interfere with the work being done by the Energy Sector Enterprise Team (ESET) - a public/private sector body currently exploring Jamaica's near-term options for adding capacity to the national electricity grid.

Mr. Paulwell said he and the Prime Minister are in discussions about the US natural gas option, and the trip to the that country will be exploratory. Natural gas is a widely used source of  producing electricity, and the US offers some of  the cheapest rates worldwide.
