JLP councillor elect Christopher Townsend freed of fraud charges

By Clinton McGregor

Jamaica Labour Party councillor-elect and businessman, Christopher Townsend, was freed of fraud charges on Friday before the St. Andrew Parish Court.

Mr. Townsend, who owns a fleet of buses, was charged in August 2022 by members of Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB), with fraud and conspiracy to defraud following allegations that he allowed another bus operator to use a licence plate from one of his buses to operate in breach of the Road Traffic Act.

PSTEB uncovered the fraud when it seized the bus with the incorrect licence plate.

Investigations later led to Mr. Townsend being arrested and charged with fraudulent use of licence plate, among other offences.

He was also accused of fraudulently obtaining an insurance certificate from an insurance company.

But during submissions before the court, his attorney Christopher Townsend, who is his relative, urged the court to dismiss the case on the ground that prosecutors had failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove a case against the councillor elect.

The judge agreed and dismissed the case.
