The Jamaica Labour Party is promising that the tax cuts in its manifesto will be implemented in phases to ensure the economy remains stable.

The JLP is promising to gradually cut income tax to 15 per cent of annual earnings, if it remains in office for a third term.

A personal income tax rate of 25 per cent is currently applied to annual taxable income, while those whose earnings exceed six million dollars pay 30 per cent.

Kamina Johnson Smith, Chairman of the JLP's Manifesto and Achievements Committee,  says its proposals are not intended to seek votes at the expense of the economy.

In contrast, Mrs Johnson Smith, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica’s Beyond the Headlines, sought to pour cold water on the PNP's proposal to raise the income tax threshold to 3.5 million dollars, claiming that the move would require additional taxation.
