JLP downplays assertion that shooting in Central Kingston was gang-related

Senator Abka Fitz-Henley, Chairman of the JLP's Communication Task Force

Chairman of the Jamaica Labour Party's Communication Task Force, Senator Abka Fitz-Henley, is downplaying a suggestion by People's National Party General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell that Tuesday night's shooting involving Kingston Central MP Donovan Williams was gang-related.

Senator Fitz-Henley says, based on his own investigations, Dr. Campbell's claim is without merit.

"We have no such information, and before coming on air, I checked with the Police High Command and I made an enquiry whether they have any such information and the answer is no. So I'm not too sure where Dayton got that from. I'd hope it's not another case of him saying what is not so," said the JLP spokesman.

He noted that the party is awaiting the findings of the police investigation.

"As far as the matter of what a motive is, we leave that to the police to determine. What we can do is just indicate the facts of what transpired and when I interacted with members of the community and the MP's campaign team, they collaborated what he said. But the position of the Jamaica Labour Party concerning this matter is that we urge supporters to exercise restraint, await the outcome of the investigation and take all steps that are possible to ensure that peace prevails," he urged.

Senator Fitz-Henley was speaking on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines on Thursday.

According to reports, gunmen emerged from a motor vehicle and opened fire at MP Williams and a group of Jamaica Labour Party supporters, including members of his campaign team.

The shooting happened while they were erecting campaign signs at the corner of Lower South Camp Road and Tower Street.

The Police High Commission is urging people with information on Tuesday night's incident to come forward.
