The Jamaica Labour Party has brought another defamation suit against a member of the People's National Party's shadow cabinet.
The attorney representing JLP deputy leader Desmond McKenzie on Tuesday filed documents in the Supreme Court outlining claims against Opposition spokesperson on Education and Training, Senator Damion Crawford.
The legal action is in relation to various statements made, uttered and or published at a public meeting convened by the PNP at the Portmore Community College on March 2, 2025.
At the meeting, Senator Crawford is reported to have made reference to the Equalization Fund and suggested that Mr. Mckenzie was a thief in his role as Minister of Local Government and Community Development.
According to the claim, the defamatory words were widely circulated on social media and on other online platforms and were published to a substantial but unquantifiable number of attendees, viewers and listeners.
Mr. McKenzie is contending that the statements contained words that were false and defamatory of him and as a result, he suffered injury, loss and damage including to his reputation.
He is seeking damages, aggravated and or exemplary; interest at 1?ove the commercial bank's prime lending rate pursuant to Section 3 of the Law Reform Miscellaneous Provisions Act; costs and other relief that the court considers necessary or appropriate.
Mr. McKenzie's lawyer, Nashae Lannaman, says since the defamatory publication, her client has had to answer questions from financiers and business interests and even ordinary Jamaican citizens about his integrity.
Ms. Lannaman further claims that he has also been shunned by individuals in public spaces who have concluded that he was involved in wrongdoing.
The decision to file the defamation suit came after Senator Crawford failed to apologise or retract the statements as requested in a letter of demand dated March 4.
On Monday, MP for Kingston Central Donovan Williams and medical equipment supply company, Medical Technologies Limited (MediTech), filed a defamation suit against the PNP Shadow Minister of Health Dr. Alfred Dawes over allegations made about the price tag for a surgical drill purchased for the Bustamante Hospital for Children.
