Mayor of May Pen Joel Williams has made it clear that he will respect the decision of the Jamaica Labour Party's Secretariat which has recommended that former senator and Deputy Mayor of Kingston Delroy Williams be the party's standard bearer in the upcoming parliamentary election for Clarendon Central.

The mayor had been endorsed by the incumbent Member of Parliament Mike Henry who had earlier confirmed that he would not be seeking re-election after serving in that position since 1980.

On Saturday, however, the JLP Secretariat said it had put forward Delroy Williams to the party's Selection Committee and Central Executive, saying he had attracted widespread support in the constituency.

When Radio Jamaica News caught up with Mayor Williams in Effortville, Clarendon on Saturday morning, he said he had accepted the party's decision.

He said he continued to "serve the people," who matter most," in his dual capacities as councillor and Chairman of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation.

The JLP said Delroy Williams was the only applicant for the position of MP candidate for Central Clarendon Central.
