JPS customers could pay for hurricane damage

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says customers may have to foot the bill for damage caused by Hurricane Dean.

At a media briefing Monday, the company's initial assessment for repairs was under US$7 million...anything over, and the customers will have to pay.

Although the company had indicated that last week that customers may not have to pay for repairs to the national power grid after Hurricane Dean, recent assessments suggest otherwise.

The company which says its now looking at repairs worth close to US$7 million and that figure is still rising.

The JPS says if these costs cannot be covered by its insurance scheme then its customers will have to foot the bill.

For now the company says that the final decision will be made by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR).

Hurricane Dean damaged more than three thousand utility poles and caused extensive damage to its equipment and power lines.

However the company is boasting of a quicker reaction and restoration time than it had following hurricane Ivan in 2004.

The JPS now says it has restored 78 per cent of its customers' power supplies and has promised that power should be fully restored by September 9.

However the company says it is facing challenges in hard hit sections of St. Elizabeth, Manchester and Clarendon.
