The Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) now has a Cardiology Department.
Non-invasive cardiac services will be provided.
The facility, which was officially opened on Wednesday, is equipped with among other things, an echocardiogram with three reading stations, five patient monitors, five infusion pumps, a defibrillator and a medical treadmill.
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton, who addressed the opening ceremony, said the number-one ailment affecting the Jamaican population is cardiovascular disease.
With more than 25 per cent of the adult population having at least one major risk factor for the condition, Dr. Tufton said there is need to improve the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and the treatment of cardiac patients, especially in the public health system.
The cardiology unit was established with $64 million provided by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund.
