KSAC clamping down on events organisers

The organisers of at least one popular roots play could be forced to cancel a show scheduled for this weekend as the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) intensifies its clampdown on unapproved entertainment events.

The KSAC says focus is being placed on the roots play "Money Worries" which is scheduled to be held at the Donald Quarrie High School in Harbour View.

Following a meeting on Tuesday, the KSAC announced that it is now targeting promoters who refuse to comply with regulations concerning the holding of entertainment events.

Mayor of Kingston, Desmond McKenzie, has expressed concern that many of these events, including roots plays, are being held without the approval of the KSAC.

He says the promoters of "Money Worries" have not sought approval from the Corporation to hold this weekend's show.

According to Mr. McKenzie, it is also unsafe to hold such events as no provision is made for security, no approval is given by the fire department and inadequate arrangements are made for parking.

"The KSAC's records that that no application was made for a Places of Amusement licence to hold this event and also the fire and engineering departments are concerned about the school that the event is being held because it doesn't offer the kind of security that is required under the Places of Amusement regulation.

"We just have to put a stop to it so that people will comply with the regulations and do the things that are necessary under the law," said Mr. McKenzie.

The Kingston Mayor is also concerned about the holding of boat rides and has also issued a warning to promoters of these events.

He said unless insurance coverage is provided for patrons and the boats are carrying the legally allowed number of persons, the KSAC will cancel the events.
