The Ministry of Labour is looking to expand the Overseas Employment Programme to 30,000 participants over the next four years.
Each year, approximately 7,000 Jamaicans are employed in the agricultural and hospitality sectors through the programme, while another 6,000 are placed in the US by private employment agencies.
Minister Karl Samuda, who is on a tour of US farms, met with officials from the Department of State, the Department of Labour and the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday to discuss the expansion of the programme, as well as the provision of Health Insurance for H-2A agricultural workers.
He said the discussions were successful and the US Government has agreed to review some of the regulations especially as they relate to the provision of insurance for the workers.
During the visit, Mr. Samuda will meet with potential employers in Washington and Miami.
