Lottery scam watchdogs applaud Western Union

The group behind a website which warns US residents to beware of calls from Jamaica's area code due to the lottery scam is applauding Western Union's move to temporarily close its operations in St. James.

Fairpoint Communications, the creators of www.beware876.com, says Western Union has taken a proactive step to combat the serious issue of fraud.

FairPoint launched the website in March and partnered with law enforcement agencies in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont to provide consumers with information on preventing phone scams.

Yesterday Technology Junior Minister Julian Robinson said in another two weeks it should be a little clearer on how the security forces and the judiciary will proceed as it relates to the lottery scam.

Mr. Robinson sayid a committee comprising representatives from the Justice Ministry and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has been set up to look at legislation and report to the Justice Minister.
