Kemon White reports
Members of the Kingston Western Police and the military have launched a major manhunt for a group of men who engaged a military team in an armed confrontation in the Denham Town Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) on Monday.
The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Oxford Street and Beeston Street and in the vicinity of Milk Lane and Last Street.
Radio Jamaica News has been informed that three people have been detained in connection with the incident.
Investigators reported that members of the Jamaica Defence Force assigned to the Denham Town ZOSO were on static duties on Monday when they observed four men, including the three suspects, walking along the roadway.
The soldiers signalled the men to stop after they were seen acting in a manner that arose their suspicions.
Three of the men complied while the fourth walked a short distance away and threw an object under a truck.
It was later discovered that the object was an illegal Taurus pistol with a magazine containing nine rounds of ammunition.
The JDF personnel then proceeded to detain the suspects when one of them started to resist, resulting in necessary force being used to accost him. While restraining the suspects, one of them ran off trying to escape.
Members of the team went into pursuit of the suspect who pulled a firearm from his waist and pointed it at them.
Members of the JDF team fired on him, but he managed to elude them and made his escape on foot in the area.
It's reported that a second JDF team responded to the incident and went to the assistance of their colleagues. While assisting with the search of the escaped suspect, the soldiers were pounced upon by a group of armed men who opened fire at them at a section of Milk Lane and Last Street.
This led to an exchange of gunfire, but the armed men managed to escape on foot in the area.
The scene was later processed by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), where 21 spent casings were recovered.
During the incident, a black 2003 Honda Accord was badly damaged by bullets.
