Mario Deane trial stalled amid juror's absence due to medical emergency

The Mario Deane trial was forced to adjourn shortly after it started in the Westmoreland Circuit Court on Wednesday morning due to the absence of a juror.

Presiding judge Justice Courtney Daye told the court that the juror had a medical emergency and the trial could not proceed as all seven jurors must be present for each sitting.

Justice Daye further informed the court that according to medical personnel, the juror, a woman, will not be able to attend court before the end of the week.

The defence was set to address the jury Wednesday, after the prosecution ended two days of closing arguments to the jury on Tuesday.

In an attempt to convince the jury to return a guilty verdict against the three cops charged in the matter, the lead prosecutor told them to arm themselves with the evidence they heard throughout the case and with observations they've made from the testimonies of witnesses.

Corporal Elaine Stewart as well as constables Juliana Clevon and Marlon Grant are on trial for the 2014 beating death of Mario Deane while he was in custody at the Barnett Street police lock-up in Montego Bay, St. James.
