Mining Minister Robert Montague has asked the Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI) to carry out an audit on all mud lakes on the island.
He said the audit must speak to the structural integrity of the mud lakes and ensure the walls are not breached and there is no leeching into groundwater systems.
Red mud is the primary waste associated with the bauxite industry.
The minister noted that the waste contains properties such as iron oxide, aluminium oxide, silicon dioxide, calcium oxide, titanium dioxide, and sodium oxide.
Mr. Montague said the industry has instituted mud disposal techniques that are environmentally friendly.
He said these lakes are designed to maintain zero discharge from the plant to the environment.
