MOH: Reporting on Chick V meets international standards

Amid speculation about the number of  confirmed cases of  the chikungunya virus in Jamaica, the Health Ministry is seeking to assure the public that its reporting method is in line with international standard.

Director of  Emergency, Disaster Management and Special Services in the Health Ministry, Dr. Marion Bullock-Ducasse, says there are 85 suspected and 24 confirmed cases of  chikungunya. Dr Bullock-Ducasse says persons with milder symptomsof  chikungunya and dengue fever are not seeking medical care. This affects the number of  reported cases.

While urging these persons to visit health centres she said when a report is sent to the Ministry, it helps to guide vector control activities.

And, Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Ken Baugh, says a study should be carried out to determine if  mosquitoes have become resilient to vector control measures.
