The Ministry of Labour has launched an investigation into
allegations that Jamaican workers have been denied jobs on the construction
site of the Secrets Spa and Resorts in St. James.
On Wednesday, more than 300 job seekers in the second city converged on the construction site at the Montego Bay Freeport, to protest the lack of jobs for locals despite scores of Chinese workers being employed.
The angry protestors stormed onto the compound where they gathered for nearly two hours.
Labour Minister Pearnel Charles told RJR News that he received a report on the incident and will dispatch a team from his Ministry to conduct a probe.
"I have already discussed the matter with the team, I expect that they will be dispatched tomorrow (Friday) or the next day and within three or four days, I expect to have a report," he said.
According to Mr. Charles, the Ministry's industrial relations department will be working to ensure that normalcy resumes on the site.
The Secrets Spa and Resorts is being constructed by a group of Spanish investors.
