More than 400 detained under St. James State of Emergency

More than 400 people have reportedly been detained since the State of Emergency was declared in St. James a week and a half ago.

Assistant Commissioner Ealan Powell, head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force Operational Command in the parish, disclosed that 450 people have been processed and released in the aftermath of the Prime Minister announcing the State of Emergency on January 18.

Thirty-three detainees remained in custody up to Saturday.

Eleven wanted men have been charged with serious crimes such as murder, shooting and rape.

In an interview with RJR News, ACP Powell said the police are ensuring that persons who are not wanted for offences are quickly released from custody.

He said the police are determined to ensure that the rights of law abiding citizens are protected under the State of  Emergency.

The Cornwall Bar Association and the Public Defender's Office had expressed concerns about the conditions under which detainees were being held.
