More than $500M worth of fake goods seized by JCA

Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) says it has seized more than $500 million worth of counterfeit items in recent years.

Alwyn Nicely, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Jamaica Customs Border Protection Division, says the seizures were part of a clampdown on breaches of intellectual property rights.

Speaking at a media briefing Thursday, Mr. Nicely said, "IPR, which is often seen as a victimless crime, is quite the opposite. We have, to date, seized and destroyed in excess of $523 million worth of goods (with items ranging) from illicit cigarettes to apparel."

He has also highlighted the dangers associated with the sale of counterfeit medication locally. He urged consumers to be cautious when purchasing pharmaceuticals as it was a matter of public safety.

"We must be absolutely sure that the things we are ingesting as medication are above board and legitimate," said Mr. Nicely.
