Mother attacks teen daughter with machete

A 31-year-old woman who attacked and chopped her 13-year-old daughter with a machete, causing serious injuries to the child, has been sentenced to prison.

Nicola White was sentenced to three months in prison on Monday when she appeared before the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Court.

Ms White of a Denham Town address had pleaded guilty.

Police investigators reported that on July 1, Ms White accused her 13-year-old of stealing her bank book.

The child denied the accusation, but her mother pulled a machete and used it to slap her several times in the face.

She then chopped the child on the left hand and shoulder.

The police say the bloodied child was then thrown to the ground by her mother who proceeded to knock her head on the ground several times in the brutal attack.

The injured 13 year old managed to escape from the yard and was rescued by passersby who called the police.

The police who arrived on the scene rushed the injured girl to the nearby Kingston Public Hospital.

Doctors who treated the child said the upper part of the child's left arm had been split open and the bone exposed.

The doctors also reported that the child suffered a fractured left hand and chop wounds to the shoulder and bruises to the face.

Ms White who fled the community, later surrendered to the police.

The mother who was facing three years in prison was saved by a report submitted by the Probation Department.

The report claimed that Ms White, the mother of four, may have acted out of frustration with the child who reportedly had a habit of stealing and coming home late from school.

Residents told the probation officers that Ms White did not have a history of abusing her children and that the 13 year old, who lived most of her life with her father in St. Catherine, joined her mother in December 2008.
