Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton says the authorities are working to remove mould from the operating theatres at the Kingston Public Hospital in a bid to reopen the facilities.

Dr Tufton addressed that matter today on Radio Jamaica's Hotline, revealing  that the malfunctioning air conditioning system, which forced the closure of the four operating theatres, has been fixed.

But mould remediation work is continuing, he said, in order to ensure infection control standards are met before reopening.

Surgeries have been relocated to other facilities across the Corporate Area.

Dr Tufton provided an update on the work being done and reiterated his concern about the ad hoc manner in which hospital facilities and equipment are maintained.

He observed that a new plant for the Kingston Public Hospital should alleviate some of the infrastructure challenges being faced by staff and patients.

The construction of the facility is still at the planning stage.
