Students and Teachers at the Munro College
in St Elizabeth were in a sombre mood Monday
as they mourned the sudden death of a
sixth form student.
The student, Amal Clarke was killed in a traffic accident
Sunday.
He was on his way back to school following the Christmas break, when the car in which he was travelling collided with a bus along the Barbary Hall main road in the parish.
The school's Vice Principal describes Amal, 17, as a model student.
Vice Principal Sonia Neil told our News Centre Amal had amassed nine CSEC subjects, with eight distinctions, giving him a sure ticket into sixth form of the all boys institution.
She said he was on the short list of candidates being considered to be the school's Head Prefect and was scheduled to visit the United Nations in February, to represent the school and country at the International Schools conference.
She says the students are receiving counselling to help them cope with the tragedy.
"We are trying to cope its very very difficult but we are relying on the power of the Lord to pull us through," she said.
Amal's 25-year-old brother Mikhail and one other person were traveling towards Munroe College from Black River when their car collided with a bus heading in the opposite direction.
Meantime, the police are reporting that information gathered so far by its accident reconstruction unit indicates that the bus driver was responsible for the crash.
Constabulary Communications Liaison Officer for St. Elizabeth, Corporal Sophia Dailey told RJR news that no charges have been laid on the bus driver who is being questioned by the police.
Rusea's student killed
And a Rusea's High School student was one of two persons who were shot dead in Bogue St. James Sunday night.
Sixteen year old Kevon Reid and Donovan Grey, 23, of Bogue Hill, were among seven persons who were shot when gunmen turned their guns on them.
Four others are in hospital in serious condition while a fifth person was treated and released.
Reports are that a white Toyota Corolla drove up and several men armed with shot guns and handguns alighted from the vehicle and opened fire.
The injured persons were taken to hospital where Mr. Grey and Kevon were pronounced dead.
The police recovered several spent shells from the scene.
The police surmise that the shooting is in reprisal for an incident on Saturday night during which several women were beaten at a wake.
