Mustard Seed to rebuild Blessed Assurance Children's Home in St. James

David Silvera, Business Manager for Mustard Seed Communities

Business Manager for Mustard Seed Communities, David Silvera, says the organisation will rebuild the Blessed Assurance Children's Home in Adelphi, St. James after it was destroyed by Hurricane Melissa.

He says the 33 residents and their caregivers who were at the facility during the hurricane are safe.

Mr. Silvera says they are being housed in other buildings on the property that were not affected by the storm.

"As a matter of fact, when our team went to check, they had to walk in nine miles from Mobay to Adelphi because the road was totally impassable. But we were fortunate from the point of view as, while the children generally live in cottages, some of the buildings are two storeys. We have a philosophy at Mustard Seed - all our offices and other things are on the second floor because we can walk; a lot of the children can't. So everyone was safe on the second floor, but Blessed Assurance is going to have to be totally rebuilt," he explained.

"Aside from Blessed Assurance, we were quite fortunate in our other homes," said Mr. Silvera. "We are more concentrating on our outreach programme to help the communities around where our homes are, obviously keeping up the day to day care."

He has appealed to Jamaicans to volunteer their time and donate to the Mustard Seed Communities.

Mr. Silvera was a guest on the Morning Agenda on Power 106FM this week.
